05 – Social Networking
I’m starting to think that social networking sites are like databases – some try to to be as massive as possible where others try to be as specific as possible.
- Start with the Common Craft Show’s short video called Social Networking In Plain English (http://www.commoncraft.com/video-social-networking).
- Browse through the start pages of these different social networking sites:
- If those aren’t enough for you, or you want to explore further, check out these sites – some have a very specific focus.
- Imeem (http://imeem.com) for music stuff.
- ComicSpace (http://www.comicspace.com) for comic artists, writers, fans, etc.
- ficlets (http://ficlets.com/) for storytelling, writing.
- Scribd (http://www.scribd.com/) for document sharing.
- Oort-Cloud (http://www.oort-cloud.org/) for scifi authors, readers.
- TripUp (http://www.tripup.com/) for travel.
- Carmun (http://www.carmun.com/) for bibliography, research, and article reviewing.
- Eons (http://www.eons.com/) for the over 50 crowd.
- Retroland (http://www.retroland.com/) for people who love “retro” culture.
- Also, check out Ning (http://www.ning.com/) Grou.ps (http://grou.ps/introduction.php) and elgg (http://elgg.org/) – sites where you can build your own social networking site.
- Write a blog post about which social networking sites you like best. Compare and contrast, even.
- Tag each of these sites in your del.icio.us account.
